If you read my last post about switching to a 12V 100Ah LiFePO₄ battery, you already know I was overdue for a better setup on my boat. But the battery is only half the story. The other half? Making life easier with a good battery box.
I actually bought this box a while back—way before I upgraded my battery. It’s been riding along in my boat for five years now, and since I love it so much, I thought it was finally time to give it a proper review. Enter the Newport Vessels Smart Battery Box Power Center.
Why I Bought It
Old-school battery setups are a hassle. Exposed wires, cheap trays, alligator clips slipping off at the worst time—been there, done that. I wanted something I could just grab, hook up, and forget about. I picked this one because it had actual external posts, built-in circuit breakers, and a battery meter. Seemed smarter than just strapping a battery to the floor and hoping for the best.
Features I Use All the Time
- External terminals: This is hands-down my favorite feature. I can hook up my trolling motor or charger without even opening the box. Just clamp on the wing nuts and you’re good to go.
- Battery meter: Not the fanciest digital readout, but it tells me if I need to charge before I even hit the water. No more guessing if I’ve got a full battery or not.
- USB and 12V ports: I’ll admit, I don’t use these a ton, but they’re nice for topping off the phone or running a small light if I’m out early or staying late.
- Built-in circuit breakers: One less thing to worry about. I haven’t had them trip on me yet, but it’s nice knowing they’re there to protect my gear.
- Solid handles and build: This thing has been tossed in and out of the truck, rained on, sat in the sun, and just generally abused. Still going strong. The latches haven’t broken and the plastic hasn’t cracked.
How It’s Worked With My LiFePO₄ Battery
When I made the switch to the 12V 100Ah LiFePO₄ battery, I was a little worried it wouldn’t fit or something weird would happen. No issues at all—it dropped right in, terminals lined up, and everything worked like before. (It’s sized for Group 24 and 27 batteries, just FYI. If you run something huge, double check before you buy.)
It also makes it super easy to pull the whole battery and box out of the boat at the end of the day—especially since the LiFePO₄ battery is so light. Makes the cleanup routine about a lot less annoying than wrestling with loose batteries and tangled wires.
What I Like
- Quick connects: No tools needed, no hassle, and no “where’d I put those wing nuts?” moments.
- Battery stays protected: Especially when stuff is rolling around in the boat or the weather turns ugly.
- Meter and breakers give some peace of mind: I always know what my battery is doing, and I don’t stress as much about something shorting out.
- Feels like it’ll last a long time: Five years in, and I haven’t managed to break it yet.
What I’d Change
- The USB port is slow, so don’t expect fast charging. It’s enough to get your phone off zero in an emergency.
- The battery meter isn’t super high-tech, but it’s simple and it works.
- Won’t fit huge batteries, but works perfect for my 100Ah setup.
Tying It All Together
Honestly, pairing the Newport battery box with my LiFePO₄ battery has made my whole boat setup simpler, safer, and a lot less annoying. I can actually spend more time fishing and less time messing with wires, and that’s what it’s all about. If you’re already thinking about upgrading your battery, do yourself a favor and grab a proper battery box to go with it.
