Why I Finally Tried the Wacky Rig (and Why I’m Never Going Back)

I’m not exactly sure why, but for years I was on the fence about trying a wacky style worm. If you read some of the forums and posts these days, a lot of people have this bad connotation that the wacky worm is somehow “cheating.” Ummmm… if there’s a product that works so good it’s considered by some to be cheating at fishing, sign me up!

So in 2024 I finally picked up this Windspeed Wacky Rig Tool. I actually have two fishing bags, so it worked out perfectly to put one of these tools in each bag—no matter where I’m at or which bag I’m using, I’m covered.

At first, when I ordered it, I thought, “Man, this is a lot of O-rings. Do I really need this many?” Well, come to find out—you do! Because I was slaying the bass with this setup. This quickly became my favorite bait, and so far in 2025, I have literally only used this wacky worm rig.

Of course, you need to make sure you have plenty of stick baits, too, because you’re almost guaranteed to get a bite if you drop the bait anywhere close to a fish. The proper way to rig the worm is to stick the worm about halfway down the tube of the tool, pull the O-ring onto the worm, and then attach your hook just through the O-ring. Your worm will last a lot longer than if you put the hook through the worm itself, which weakens it.

I might actually try the full kit next time since it comes with so many worms. That would make a great gift for Father’s Day or for the guy who took you out on his boat all day. 😉
